This is a one-year foundation level course which
provides the skills training and underpinning knowledge that may be needed
for employment in the construction industry. It is the first step towards a
career in this craft area.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry qualifications for this
course but you will be interviewed by a tutor prior to starting the course.
Study Areas
Health and Safety, construction methods, e.g. how to
assemble joints, using hand tools, drawings, calculations, timber adhesives and
fixing devices. As part of the course we will also help you improve your
communication, numeracy and IT skills.

Skills or 9.5 hours GNVQ.
Assessment
Continuous practical and written assessments. You

demonstrates that you have reached the standards set out by the industry to

Topics covered include Health and Safety, construction

This one-year course is the next step for those who
want to advance their career by moving into a supervisory role or perhaps
considering self-employment. The minimum number of units you will need to
pass to achieve this level of qualification is seven. Five units are
mandatory. There is then a further choice of either two or three units
depending which options you choose.

Study Areas
Some of the mandatory units build on your NVQ 2 work in
further depth e.g. working practices, monitoring and evaluating operations on
site. They also address the perspective of the supervisor’s responsibilities
in these areas. Practical skills are covered with areas such as complex
walling details and complex setting out.
For the optional units you can choose two from drainage, scaffolding and
concreting. The alternative option topics address surface preparation,
recording and maintaining information plus maintaining the built environment.
The programme includes the knowledge and skills required to administrate and
develop a business and the use of IT.

This is a new qualification that helps those
students who wish to work towards eventually gaining the Painting and
Decorating NVQ Level 2 but are not able to get the necessary site
experience. You will cover much of the job knowledge required by the NVQ and
gain a recognised certificate. These will then take you part way to
achieving the full NVQ which can be continued when you start work. There are
five units to be achieved to gain the certificate.

Study Areas
Units covered include the knowledge and skills required
when preparing work areas and platforms, preparing surfaces for decoration,
applying painting materials by brush and roller plus wallpapering non-complex
surface areas. When you have passed all five units you must then pass a final
phase test.
